3 Ways to grow hope and awareness

“A woman planted an Amaryllis bulb and you wouldn’t believe what happened next” would be such a great headline. With the Huntington Society of Canada’s Amaryllis bulbs you are always guaranteed to know what you are getting.

For almost as long as there has been a Huntington Society of Canada, volunteers have sold Amaryllis. When we celebrated the Society’s 40th anniversary, we uncovered a huge trove of old newsletters.

One talked about the second annual Amaryllis campaign in 1977. Back then, the variety was called “Pamela.” We now sell a premium Orange Souvereign bulb that is grown in Holland.

For almost 40 years, hundreds of thousands of bulbs have been sold, raising almost $5 million.

Behind every beautiful bloom is the story of hope for a people affected by a disease where hope is not always easy to come by.

How can you guarantee that hope and, with it, awareness grow?

Consider these 3 easy ideas:

  1. Consider selling Amaryllis in your area. Many chapters already order Amaryllis and are in need of new volunteers to sell. There are some areas of the country where more sellers are needed, like around Toronto, in New Brunswick, and some cities in Saskatchewan.
  2. Ask your co-workers to have a growing competition: a friendly one, of course. A lot of companies decorate pots or give a prize for the tallest or the one with the most flowers.
  3. Pledge to spread the word and share pictures of your own Amaryllis with the people you know on Facebook.

Every Amaryllis inspires hope. It also starts a conversation. When people see your beautiful Amaryllis growing they are going to ask about Huntington disease. That’s how awareness spreads.

You can now order Amaryllis on our website. (To do so, click here). They are delivered from early October to early December and make wonderful gifts.

Order before July 1st and, as a result of your eagerness, you will be entered into a draw for a Fitbit. That could lead to even more conversations about HD.

This year, our goal is to raise over $100,000 this year from our Amaryllis campaign. That money will go directly to providing services to families, raising awareness in Canada about HD and to fund important research.

That’s a lot of hope you can help grow.
