Comedy Night
A Comedy Night is a great way to bring people together and raise spirits, while raising money for HSC! Check out the steps and tips below for how you can host your own Comedy Night.
Steps for Hosting a Comedy Night:
- Choose a Venue – Look for a hall or restaurant that you can rent out for an evening and search for a comedian to partner with for the show. TIP: The easiest way to host a comedy night is to look in your area for a local comedy venue and reach out to them with your idea. Many larger comedy clubs will regularly have Comedy Night Fundraisers and are used to partnering with charities. They typically will sell you the tickets at a reduced price, and then you sell these tickets publicly for the event. A few comedy venues that are known to partner with charities include Yuk Yuks and Absolute Comedy, but be sure to contact local comedy clubs and inquire!
- Choose a Date – Some comedy clubs will only have certain days of the week available for charities so work with the venue to determine what dates are available and then decide what will work best for your audience.
- Determine your Ticket Price – Determine your price based on how much revenue you will make from each ticket, and how many people you expect to attend. You want to find a balance between cost and revenue so that the show is still accessible to those who want to attend, while still allowing you to hit your revenue goals! For example, if partnering with a comedy club, and they give you tickets for $10 each, consider charging $25-$30 per ticket for $15-$20 of profit per ticket. TIP: You may be able to set your ticket price to match the standard ticket price to attend an event at that comedy club, especially if the club sold you your tickets at a discounted rate.
- Look at Extra Revenue Streams – Some venues will allow you to host a 50/50, silent auction or other forms of raffles during the event. This is a great way to make some additional revenue during your Comedy Night. Fill out the raffle license form linked below and HSC can secure a raffle license for your event. Comedy clubs will often have people attending who are not aware of HD, so being able to hold a raffle, or get on stage will help to spread awareness!
- Promote on Social Media – Make sure to let people know about your event online! Check out some poster templates, save the date templates, and social media tips and tricks below.
- Sell, Sell, Sell! – Once your event details are confirmed, all your focus should be on selling tickets to your event. Make sure to share with your friends and family, share on social media and check out community events listings in your area!
Virtual Comedy Night
Another option is to host a virtual comedy night! A lot of the steps will be the same as above, however, here are some things you’ll need to consider:
- Identify a Comedian or Multiple Comedians for your Show – You can get in touch with local comedy clubs to recommend a comedian who would be willing to do a virtual show, or reach out to comedians you know!
- Determine What Platform to Use – Work with the comedian you’ve booked to determine what they are most comfortable with, whether it be Zoom, Facebook Live, or some other streaming platform.
- Open Online Registration – Work with HSC to set up an online registration/ticket page for individuals to sign up for the event. Settings can be established for registrants to receive a link to the online event once they have paid for their ticket. You can also use the online page to sell raffle tickets, or link to an online auction!
From there continue on with the steps outlined above and promote your event and sell tickets!
Silent Auctions
For additional revenue generation, try adding a silent auction. It’s always a good idea to look at multiple revenue streams when hosting an event and a silent auction is a great option because it does not require a license and you can ask local businesses for donations. You can also do an online auction if your event is virtual.

Raffles
If you’d prefer to do a raffle at your event, check out this document outlining some details! If you are planning to hold a raffle, a raffle license will be required. HSC is typically responsible for applying for this license once you provide us with the details. Click here to submit a form with all your raffle details and HSC will apply for the raffle license. Keep in mind, it can take up to two months for the license to come in so you will need to plan ahead.
