Gail DeKoning and her husband Neil of Niagara have done a wonderful job for 28 years running the Book Sale, with all proceeds going to the Huntington Society of Canada. They stored books in their own home garage, and then lugged box after box of books to Fairview Mall in St. Catharines, where they set up tables, sorted and catalogued books, made a wooden framework, plus crafted signs – twice a year!
And it’s in some of the neat details that their volunteer commitment really shines through. The garage was for books, not the car, which had to be satisfied sitting in the driveway, facing hail, rain, snow or sunshine. When they ran out of room in the garage, all the books were laboriously moved and placed, in categorical order, in a heated room in the barn (sharing the space with some antique cars, it has to be said). After 28 years, Gail and Neil deserved a little break. They downsized and are now living in a beautiful condo. However, book selling hasn`t been all that these two amazing people have done, volunteering wherever and whenever needed. Thank you, Gail and Neil!
