A donation of securities is an efficient way to support the Huntington Society of Canada. It can allow you to save more and to give more.
The Benefits:
The Canada Revenue agency does not apply capital gains tax on donations of publicly traded securities. You have a capital gain when you sell a security for more then you paid for it.
When you sell your shares for cash, you’re required to pay tax on the gain, even if you plan to donate the proceeds from the sale to the Huntington Society of Canada. But, when you donate the security directly to the Society, the capital gains are not subject to tax, allowing you to make a larger gift and you will benefit from a tax receipt for the the full value of your eligible security.
We encourage you to seek the appropriate tax advice from your accountant or financial adviser to determine the best option for you.
